Weymouth 2007 will be England Handball's 5th major international Beach Handball tournament on the shores of the UK. The championship is organised with major support and encouragement from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council and will be sponsorsed as in previous years by a number of large companies. The tournament is also part of the European Handball Federation's European Beach Handball Tour, which employs a points system to encourage the growth and development of Beach Handball Tournaments across Europe. Previous years have seen the championships welcome players and officials from England, France, Croatia, Pakistan, Sweden, Brazil, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Italy and organisers are keen to hear from any overseas teams interested in taking part to make this year's tournament an even bigger event! Beach Handball was first played in England in the summer of 2000. England Handball organised the very first tournament in Ashford, Kent, some twenty miles from the nearest beach! The tournament was played on one court on an in-land beach volleyball court. Participating teams included Liverpool, Loughborough Old Boys, London, Cannock, Rossendale & Ashford. England Handball sees beach handball as an excellent opportunity to promote handball in the UK. Since Beach Handball first stormed UK shores, many schools in the Dorset area have added handball to their PE curriculum as a result of the Weymouth & Portland Junior Development Project supported by Awards for All and the Weymouth Beach Handball Championship started attracting considerable interest from major sponsors and the media. With spectators counted in their thousands, two dedicated beach handball courts, international teams and great weather this is one event not to be missed. |
